The former Japanese Imperial army often employed the same tactic. It can be said that from the outset, however, the Japanese army had a tendency to underestimate the importance of supply communications. Furthermore, they did not make a distinction between a short-term and a long-term campaign in many of their battle strategies. Employing strategies that often ignored supply lines during the Pacific War led to tragedies like the one at Imphal.

2 The crucial tactical distinction between short-and long-term campaigns, as well as the vital role of supply lines, was not lost on Chu Ko K’ung-ming, as told in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. When Liu Pei died, K’ung-ming received his last blessing, executed a series of far-reaching campaigns of grand design, and challenged his rival, the state of Wei, to battle. This battle, he realized, would be a hard, long-term struggle. The reasons for this were twofold. First, Wei was a large state with many times the resources of K’ung-ming’s state of Shu. Second, to strike at Wei territory, it was necessary to traverse high mountains called the Ch’in Ling Range. Naturally, securing supplies would be extraordinarily difficult.
