Paul commended these believers for taking their error seriously, turning away from sin in an intentional and meaningful way, and thus producing godly fruit. He described their sorrow as “godly” because of their awakening to the holiness of God, which naturally produced repentance and confession of their sin, followed by a transformation that immediately began to produce good fruit in their lives. I propose that confession of sin is an integral, inseparable, and foundational part of repentance. How can a person turn away from something negative and toward something positive unless he acknowledges the negative (sin) that he is turning from and the positive (God) that he is turning toward? When a person confesses a sin, they are honestly acknowledging they have missed it, agreeing with God’s assessment of the situation, and conceding to obey Him. This is what “confess” means: to acknowledge, to agree with, and to concede.
