Two days after we reached the Hanle observatory’s base camp, I decided to climb to the summit of Mount Saraswati. Sonam, a Ladhaki engineer, suggested I proceed slowly in case I hadn’t yet adjusted to the altitude. I smirked inwardly-the summit did not look particularly far. Within minutes, though, I knew he was right. I was drawing deep breaths but my lungs refused to respond. Tightness settled around my chest.
I could barely take two steps before having to stop. I literally inched my way to the top. At the summit, prayer flags flapped in the steady wind. The 2-meter telescope shares the summit with three stu pas, one built by the astronomers and two more built by the locals for the Dalai Lama, who has twice visited the observatory. From the top, I could see right across the valley. All around were imposing snowcapped mountains.
